Storytime at the B&N Book Fair

On Saturday, May 5, the BSI PTO held a Book Fair fundraiser at the 7th Avenue Barnes & Noble. Third Grade teacher Audrey Elias was there, reading selections from a variety of books to an avid group of students between 2 and 3pm, and then consulting with kids and their families about good just-right books for a while after the read-aloud. If you missed the event, it’s not too late to support the school and pick up some great new books for your family: the fair continues for all your online purchases at www.barnesandnoble.com through Wednesday, May 9. Brooklyn PTA 5K Run for Schools

On Sunday, April 29, BSI students, parents and staff members will be taking part in the 2012 Brooklyn PTA 5K Run for Schools in Prospect Park. Sign-in begins at 9am and the race/run/walk/stroll/toddle starts at 10am. Participants will meet at Bartell Pritchard Square (15th St. and Prospect Park West). Register to run by visiting nycruns.com/brooklynpta, and drop Karla Rothstein a note at kmsr@latentnyc.com to let her know you’ll be joining the BSI group on Sunday. Assistant Principal Nicole Nelson is planning to be there; Parent Coordinator Kelly Baxter Golding hopes to be there with both her boys. Who else will you see? Come and find out!

BSI first grade teacher Ms. Boyer-Madisson teams up with a former student, now a BSI second grader, to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday – also Read Across America Day – on Friday, March 2. “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Of the some 1,700+ NYC public schools, we are one of 22 who are being recognized for their efforts in building a school-wide culture of respect.

Our leader here is Toi Ferguson. As Ms. Durgin says, Toi is the weaver of our school community and culture, and when we sit around the table with Toi, we are at the loom.

Please join me in celebrating Ms. Ferguson’s work, and the work of your children, in celebrating our Tribes community — a community centered around the ideas of mutualrespect and personal best — where there truly is respect for all.

Post Office Opens Monday!

Want to send a BSI friend a letter? The Second Grade Post Office has its Grand Opening on Monday, February 13. Anyone with a letter to send should plan on bringing some change to buy stamps (postcards are a penny, letters a nickel, and oversized letters a dime, and all our stamps feature student artwork!).

Second Grade Post Office Coming Soon

Postal service will begin at BSI shortly, as our second grade students ramp up for this exciting real-world modeling activity. Soon students in all classes will be able to write cards and letters to one another, then buy stamps at the BSI Post Office and have their correspondence delivered by expert second-grade mail carriers. More information will be coming home soon!

BSI Gives Back

Our students are very excited to be taking part in two initiatives to give back to our community this month: the Penny Harvest wraps up at the end of this week, and the Coat Drive continues for a couple more weeks. Students have been bringing in hundreds of pennies to fill their class jars; for each time a class fills its jar, the teacher gets a penny pin. Which class will give the most to help others? We’ll find out on Friday! Meanwhile, the coat receptacle in the lobby of the building is filling up with warm coats and outerwear to help keep people warm this winter; it gives all of us a warm feeling to put our old coats into the box and to think of how we are helping others.

Curriculum Morning

We are gearing up for Curriculum Mornings at BSI; all parents are invited – no, encouraged! – to attend. You’ll learn about this year’s curriculum and review the expectations for the year. It’s a special morning for us at BSI, and one we look forward to at the begnning of each school year.

Here are the dates for each grade (and they are also on the website calendar):

*Kindergarten:* Wednesday, October 5th, 8:30 to 9:15 in your child’s classroom.
*First Grade:* Thursday, October 6th, 8:30 to 9:15 in your child’s classroom.
*Second Grade:* Thursday, October 13th, 8:30 to 9:15 in your child’s classroom.
*Third Grade:* Tuesday, October 11th, 8:30 to 9:15 in your child’s classroom.

Children will not be in the classroom at this time. After the meeting, you are invited to join Donna and Nicole in the auditorium; they will answer lingering questions. Third grade parents: Donna and Nicole will also speak about the third grade state tests.
