K001 Week of 12/5/16
Hello K-001 Families!
It was so wonderful to meet many of you during Parent Teacher Conferences (PTCs) on Wednesday, November 30th. As always, it is a pleasure to have a few extra minutes to talk about your a child holistically – socially, emotionally and academically.
Some questions that came up during PTCs:
- Does my child have friends?
- Does she play well with others?
- Is he kind/respectful to others?
- How can I help him/her at home?
How can I support my child at home?
Read daily – What does that look like?
- You reading to your child as they look at the pictures
- Have your child tell the story by talking about what is happening in the pictures
- Don’t limit reading to just books – Connect reading to everyday life — posters, signs, menus, grocery lists
Word Work Activities – During the parent conferences, I showed many of you ways to practice simple word work activities at home using (CVC -consonant-vowel-consonant words). Some examples include: words with short vowels – Examples: cat, bat, rat, sat, mat
You can either use magnetic letters or write letters on a small pieces of paper and cut them apart: m, g, d, p, h, t, i, o.
Review each letter, making sure your child knows the sound. Starting at the top of the list below say a word and have your child make the word with the letters. Then say the next word. One letter will change. Listen with your child to see if it is the beginning letter, the middle letter or the ending letter that needs to change. Have your child change the letter to make the new word. Continue down the list, changing one letter at a time – mop, top, tip, hip, hit, hot, pot, dot, dog, dig, pig
