Grade 5 Math, Place Value Week of 12/5/16

Hello All,
Things have been heating up in the math room even though the temperatures have been dropping outside!
In fifth grade, we have finished division and are moving on to place value. As we move through the unit, students will realize that our place value system is multiplicative, and that multiplication and division play a huge role in our place value system.
Our big debate today was what the role of the comma is in our number system. There was a conversation about whether or not 1200 is equivalent to 1,200. Does leaving the comma out affect the value of the number? In the next few days, students will be exploring how the places in our system are related and will eventually be extending this understanding to decimals.
Enjoy the rest of your week!
