Here is some of the exciting work happening in Kindergarten!

Our young readers are very eager to apply their reading super powers (strategies) while reading their just right books.  These strategies are meant to help early readers work on figuring out the words in their books. It is important for beginning readers to be encouraged to work through tricky words when they come to them.  Here are some more strategies that we are adding to our reading powers: Partner Power (working together in a partnership to practice and share strategies while reading books), Book Talk Power (using different phrases that help us talk about books) and Persistence Power (trying different strategies until we can work through reading tricky words.)  Click here for a document that has some detailed tips for how you can help your child at home while reading books at their independent reading level.

In math, we began a new unit on investigating how numbers can be made up of two or more parts.  This is called the part, part, whole relationship of numbers.  This is a very important number concept for early number sense, one that is built upon as students learn addition, subtraction and place value.   When students are exploring parts of a number they need to work with numbers in a variety of ways and with a variety of concrete materials.  We have begun to do this through rich contexts, or stories, and through different games and activities. You will have an opportunity to experience some of this work at Family Friday this week.
