As the 5th grade begun the reading of Number the Stars, we realized that much more time will need to be dedicated to helping us gain an understanding of the geography, the history and themes of the Holocaust. As a result, we are replacing some units to accommodate this.
The following changes have been made to the syllabus:
- Instead of Gathering Evidence and Speaking to Others: Natural Disasters in the Western Hemisphere (reading) — students will engage in a non-fiction unit focused on the geography,the sequence of events of the Holocaust and human rights—with a literacy focus on author’s point of view, research, opinion writing, and public speaking.
- We will no longer be reading Tuck Everlasting.
