Welcome to 2nd Grade!

Welcome To Second Grade!
Welcome to second grade! We are your child’s teachers this year. We are very excited to embark on this year of learning and exploration with your student. This will be a great year.
Anne has experience teaching second, third, and fourth grades at schools throughout the city, with most of her time spent in second grade. She has been fortunate to work with and learn from many talented teachers and students over the years. When Anne is not teaching, she is a busy mother to her son Paul, who is in third grade, and her son Damon, who is in Kindergarten. Her husband Jesse works at Brooklyn Public Library, and is always happy to find great books for our classrooms! Anne loves being both a mom and a teacher, and feels that these two parts of her life are not separate, but instead compliment each other well. Working with students all day helps her understand her children’s lives more completely, and her own kids enhance her ability to connect to and empathize with her students.
Tracy has previously taught Special Education through a variety of grades (2-6) in BSI. This will be her third year teaching second grade. Tracy loves to be involved with hands on projects and field trips with the students. When Tracy is not teaching she enjoys spending her time with her family and new puppy. Some of her favorite pastimes are cooking, baking and painting. Tracy feels very privileged to be working with your children.
Our year will be filled with many opportunities for your child to grow as a reader, writer, mathematician and thinker. Equally important, we will work together to create a community where each child feels respected and appreciated for his or her unique talents and interests.
We believe that frequent communication between parents and teachers is necessary for your child to have a happy, safe, and successful classroom experience. When you have questions and concerns throughout the year, we can be reached by email at amontero@bsi686.org and tmathis@bsi686.org or you can write a note and send it in your child’s backpack. We will update our class blogs weekly so that you know what we are doing in class.
Please look in your child’s home folder for two forms: a parent survey, and a request for contact information. The survey will help foster our parent-teacher connection by helping us understand your unique perspective on your child. Please return both forms by Monday, September 11, 2017.
The students will be decorating their writing journals on Monday. If possible please send in family pictures and other items that mean something special to your child so that they can personalize their journal.
Just a side note, we will have snack everyday in class and we wanted to remind you that our classroom are a nut free zone due to allergies. We thank you in advance for your understanding.
Finally, in order to create a visibly warm and enriching environment, we invite each student to bring in a plant. A bit of nature will help make our classrooms a peaceful place.
We look forward to learning more about your child and working with you throughout the year.
Sincerely,
Tracy Mathis and Anne Montero
