Gr7 Humanities First 8 Days
The first 8 days of our Humanities course have been spent cultivating culture and community in our classroom. We have been reflecting on and implementing the Humanities Norms:
- Equity
- One Mic
- Integrity
- Autonomy
- Service
In connection to 9/11, we looked at current events case studies of Islamophobia in order to draw out important concepts that will thread together curriculum throughout the year. Some of those concepts are:
- Conformity
- Social Justice
- Stereotypes
- Oppression
- Identity
In terms of literacy, we wrote introduction letters and read the first chapter of Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian. This chapter will serve as our mentor text as we begin writing our literary identity pieces, which will be the first published writing of the year. We also spent time reflecting on “Great Sentences” from our introduction letters and deduced elements of personal writing style. Finally, we covered the following literary techniques:
- Simile
- Metaphor
- Hyperbole
- Characterization
