This week in Reader’s Workshop, we are learning that as readers we have to do a lot to keep track of all the information (facts) that we are learning. We are working on linking information we have learned from paragraph to paragraph, page to page and chapter to chapter. This skill will follow through into our writing of nonfiction.

Some of our thoughts from our Notice/Wonder about Nonfiction Books:

In Writer’s Workshop, our students have chosen their nonfiction topics! They are so excited! We have a range of topics from animals to storms to historical events. You will be receiving a letter home with your child’s topic on it. Topics cannot be changed once they are chosen. Please take your child to the library and check out a couple of books so that your student can begin their research.

In Math Workshop, we are taking our reading comprehension skills and putting them to work in math. We are beginning to look at two step story problems. Here is an example:

Beth had 12 blue stars and 15 yellow stars.  Sam gave her some more.  Now Beth  has 40 stars.  How many stars did Sam give Beth?

We are discovering that these types of problems have many different parts and also have different ways of solving them. These types of problems are helping us to think flexibly and vary the strategies we use to solve them.

We look forward to meeting with you on Thursday! Have a great week!
