Here’s a look into our week ahead…
In Writer’s Workshop, our researchers are busy planning out their nonfiction books and starting to write! We looked through our bins of nonfiction books and thought about the choices that the authors make when compiling a book. We began by making a list of features that nonfiction books may contain. We also looked at the structure of the books. We found out that they are set up in different ways, such as question/answer, compare/contrast, text/image, and through a story. This planning is going to be a pivotal piece in helping to put our books together.
Here is an image of what a planning pages looks like:
In Reader’s Workshop, we are discovering the difference between primary and secondary sources through the lens of Henry Hudson and the Lenape. We have looked at paintings and read testimony from people that were there to witness the first encounters between the Europeans and the American Indians. We have learned to ‘infer’ by looking at the image or text and then follow through with a deeper reading of the topic.
In Math Workshop, we are starting to connect our measurement unit with an investigation of data. Students began by measuring each other and recording the data on a class chart. As the kids attempted to interpret the data, they quickly realized that we need a more efficient way to organize our information. We then learned about line plots as an organizational tool, and tried them out with our own data. Next we will learn about bar graphs!
