Grade 6 Math Week of 1/8/18
In honor of the extreme winter weather we’re having, we began our negative numbers unit today!
We started this unit by discussing negative numbers in terms of temperature changes. It was very fitting that we had such low temperatures and a strong winter storm last week. I mentioned to both 601 and 602 that there was a day last week when my best friend told me it was -13°F at her home in Indiana, and I noticed the temperature on my car thermometer said 13°F. Both are cold, but 26°F colder when it’s already that cold out is rough!
As we move through this unit, we will explore how to add, subtract, multiply and divide when negative numbers are part of the equation. We will also review the distributive property and order of operations as they relate to our inclusion of all rational numbers.
Hopefully all the negative numbers will stay in math class (and maybe in our homework) for quite a while.
