Grade 1: Welcome Back!

Welcome back to school!  We hope everyone had a safe and happy spring break.

Science

In science first graders learned about food chains.  A food chain shows how each living thing gets food and how nutrients and energy are passed from creature to creature.  For example, grass uses the sun to make energy and grow. A rabbit eats the grass and a fox eats the rabbit.

We are ending our science unit on animals by creating our own animals.  First graders designed an animal that could survive in a certain habitat.  They created special body parts and behaviors for their animal. We are working with Ms. Nanna, our art teacher, to create two and three dimensional models of our animals.

Math

In math we are continuing our geometry unit.  We have been using special sets of shapes to explore how shapes are made and how we can break larger shapes into small shapes. Tangrams can be used for similar activities at home.  Here is a link to a free printable tangram set and some tangram puzzles. https://ideas.gstboces.org/programs/tangrams/printables.cfm

Google “tangrams” for a lot more resources.

Social Studies

Soon we will be studying maps.  We would love your help in building a class collection of maps.  If you have any maps that you can donate to our class please send them in with your child.  We want a variety of maps from different kinds of places. For example, maps of zoos, parks, museums and neighborhoods.  Maps that show physical features like lakes, mountains and rivers and maps that show human created features like buildings, roads and bridges.

Reminder:  We have a trip to the Brooklyn Museum on April 12th.
