Gr2 Blog Week of 5/10

Dear Families,

What a wonderful time we’ve had this week on our trips! Our walk over the Brooklyn Bridge was beautiful. The kids were able to experience the magnificent structure first hand and notice all of the hard work and skill put into making it. At Snug Harbor, we saw a farm in its early stages of planting, and we dissected a seed! Ask your kids if they can describe the different parts! Here is a look at our week ahead:

First some reminders:

    • 201 Construction Kids : May 11th ***Please send your child in with a shopping bag to carry their bridge home in. They are quite large and will not fit in a backpack.
    • Highline: May 16th
    • 202 Constriction Kids: May 21st ***Please send your child in with a shopping bag to carry their bridge home in. They are quite large and will not fit in a backpack.

  • The last Scholastic book order for the year will be coming home next week. Please place your order by the end of May. This is a great opportunity for you to order books for summer reading.

In Writer’s Workshop we are beginning a new unit: “Reviews”. In this unit we will learn what makes a review different from other types of books and stories. There are many specific characteristics that we will be focusing on throughout the unit. We have taken the word REVIEW apart and talked about what it means. The kids came up with these ideas:

  • To view something
  • To look at it closely
  • Take it apart
  • Go over again and change things

Through this process the students will not only learn about reviews but create two of their own. One on a book that they have read and one on topic of their choice!

In Math Workshop, we are taking a deep look at subtraction, with a focus on interpreting story problems and also utilizing multiple strategies to solve problems. We have explored a wide variety of story problems that can be solved using subtraction. The students were able to recall what they had learned previously in the year and we are now able to create their own story problems using 3 digit numbers for the class to solve. Please have your student to continue reviewing their addition and subtraction facts as this will only help them going forward.
