Salt Clay Relief Maps- Donations needed!

As part of our study of Geography, 3rd graders are currently learning about the differences between Physical Maps and Political Maps.

Maps in simple terms represent a geographical area in a way that enables people to find places and/or to better understand the features of a particular destination. Two of the most common forms are political and physical maps.

Political maps are designed to show governmental boundaries of countries and states. They can also indicate the location of major cities, and they usually include significant bodies of water.

Physical maps often include much of the same data found on a political map, but their primary purpose is to show landforms like deserts, mountains and plains. Their topography style presents an overall better picture of the local terrain.

In partnerships, students have chosen a continent, and will be responsible for creating both a physical and political map for their continent.

This study of flat maps will lead to students thinking about topography and creating a Salt Clay Relief map.  In small groups, students will create Salt Clay, using a simple no-cook recipe. They will then work in partnerships to create a relief map of their chosen continent.

We need your help gathering materials!  Please use this Class 301 Donations Sign Up to indicate what ingredients you can donate!

We will also need to BORROW some kitchen tools. Please send in the following items, that we will use, wash, and return to you after our project is complete!

We’ll need:

• large plastic or metal mixing bowls
• 1 cup measures
• 1 Tablespoon measuring spoons

Please label your items with masking tape, so that we can return them to the proper owner!
