Gr2 Blog Week of 11/8/18

Dear Families,
We are in the midst of a busy and fun week here in second grade. This week we are continuing with our class read aloud Puppy Power. We are noticing patterns that occur with our main character, Fran. She is always acting bossy and mean! As the book progresses, we are also starting to notice the times when she acts “out of character” and is beginning to change. These are key moments for our second grade readers to pay attention to. We are also using the plot to spark conversations about how we deal with friendships in second grade.
In Math we are continuing to work on two step story problems. Examples of these have been sent home for your child to work on. We have also been focusing on communicating and thinking clearly. We are practicing this by postering our work and sharing it with our class community.
Thank you for collecting all of the nonfiction books for your kids. They are so enthusiastic about the project. This week we started to plan our books by thinking about the most important ideas we will need to teach others about our topics. Next week we will begin our research!
We have exciting news: it’s Post Office Season in second grade! We are gearing up to open the annual BSI Post Office in mid-December by exploring what we know about communication. Over the coming weeks, we will be designing stamps, mailboxes, posters, and postcards, and writing tons of letters! We are currently looking for donations of kid-friendly magazines and catalogs, which we will use to design the postcards we will sell. You could also send in winter-themed stamps and stickers, as well as glitter glue or other decorations.
Please note Thursday, November 15th is a half day. Dismissal is at 11:40. Parent teacher conferences will take place in the afternoon and evening. You are only allotted a slot if you sign up ahead of time. Please look out for an email later today with a link to sign up. Conferences are 10 minutes long, so please arrive on time. We are adhering to a tight schedule. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
Have a great week!
