Gr2 Parent Meeting Recap

 

Hello Families,

We want to extend our appreciations to the small group of parents who were able to attend our second grade family meeting this morning. We understand that the inclement weather made travel difficult for many of you. Please see below for a brief recap of what we discussed:

Math:

  • Last week we started the T-Shirt Factory. This is context for students explore place value
  • Big ideas include unitizing (1 ten = ten ones) and place value
  • The unit supports the development of addition and subtraction strategies, including the algorithm and why it works

Literacy:

  • Starting Realistic Fiction Units in both Writing and Reading
  • Focus is on character- what is the main character like? How do you know? When/why do they change? What kinds of problems do they encounter? How do they deal with their problems?
  • In writing, we will focus on developing a story with the Story Elements: Character, Setting, Change, Movement Through Time, Plot
  • After the break, we will begin Series Book Clubs
  • Some popular Realistic Fiction series include:

    • Ivy and Bean
    • Ready, Freddy!
    • A-Z Mysteries
    • Junie B. Jones

BEAM:

  • We will be doing a project based on the unique geography of NYC.
  • Students will be creating their utopian version of a piece of the 5 boroughs.
  • Students will keep in mind the “Five Forever Factors” that influence humanity, including Geography, Technology, Culture, Economics, and Politics.

Center For Architecture:

  • We will be working with CFA in the classroom for multiple visits.
  • Students will be studying the structure and function of bridges.
  • They will be creating bridges using multiple types of materials such as marshmallows and toothpicks.

Upcoming Trips:

February 25th -Brooklyn Academy of Music

April 2 and 3rd- Wyckoff House

Brooklyn Bridge Walk- To be determined.
