Grade 1, Class 101: Poetry

Hello!

We have spent time this week exploring, reading, writing and learning about 3 specific kinds of poetry:

  • Acrostic
  • Shape
  • Rebus

Please ask your child to explain what each kind of poem looks like! (They could even WRITE you an example of each as a home extension.) We have described these kinds of poems as the “What” we can write when we want to write poetry.

Next week, we will explore two other forms of poetry.

We have also begun to create a “Poet’s Toolbox” that contains the tools a poet may use when writing. Our metaphor is: that a poet uses tools when he/she feels the need – just like a builder chooses the right tool for a job: we do not always need the saw… sometimes we need to use the hammer!

Our tools so far are…

  • Onomatopoeia (boom, crack, hiss, snap, pop) ASK your child for more sound words… they LOVE this tool!!!
  • Rhyme

A poet can decide WHY to use the tool. (It’s fun… it’s silly… it helps the reader “hear” what the poet hears…) A poet can decide WHEN to use the tool. (In every poem… once in awhile…) A poet also decides HOW to use it. (The rhyming words are in every line… the rhyming words are in the first and third lines…)

Next week we will be adding a few new tools to our toolbox!

I will try to take as many pictures of their poems as possible next week! Stay tuned!

Encourage your poet to write some poems this week… and ask them what my poem was about today! =)

Enjoy the weekend!!
