Grade 7 Humanities: The Absolutely True Discussion

This week’s blog has been written entirely by student writers: Eva Perez, Paris Polatidis, Milo Shaklan, and Kayla Zirofsky.

This week we unofficially started reading the book The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. We went in depth about a cartoon that Junior, the main character, drew. We talked about what the cartoon means and what Junior is saying and what he is making fun of. After that, we drew our own cartoons. Like Junior’s, in our cartoons we were supposed to be making fun of an aspect of our identity that we felt comfortable joking about.

The first chapter was about the main character of the novel, Junior, sharing his backstory. Things were mentioned such as his health problems, bullying because of that, and how he draws to get it off his mind. With this novel as inspiration, we wrote about what distinguishes us as an individual. During the week of editing our Literary Identity piece, we talked about literary techniques such as similes, metaphors, and hyperboles, different comma rules, and how to make the purpose of the essay clear to the reader.
