Grade 5 Reminders

Dear Families,
Happy last week of October…yikes, already?! Time flies when you’re in your work FLOW
I hope to see you all in just a few weeks (yes, Parent-Student-Teacher Conferences are almost among us!) More later… about why I value students to be present at our conference sooner to the conference date.
Mark the following dates, which can also be found on the BSI Calendar + the Blog.
Oct 31 Sept/Oct birthdays (students only)
Nov 7 Election Day (no school for students)
Nov 16 Parent-Teacher Conferences (Half-Day 11:30 am dismissal)
Nov 19 Barnes & Noble PTO Event – Come out, for a read aloud with Sevgi!
Nov 23-24 Thanksgiving Recess
We hope to see you soon, for a school-wide Family Friday event…whether it is to partake in a Socratic Seminar, listen to what we’ve been learning about, discover what research we’ve been conducting, witness our collaboration skills, get a feel of our environment and see what we do, read some of our writing, learn about our reading process etc…ahhh, to be a kid in 2017 is a privilege, especially at the Brooklyn School of Inquiry…where it’s a happy talent to know how to play – in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s words. The date for school-wide family event TBA.
Just a friendly reminder that tomorrow, we will be celebrating our Sept-Oct birthdays. To some people, birthdays may not be a big deal, but when you are a 10-year-old kid the day you were born is kind of a BIG DEAL, so we will go ahead and celebrate birthdays bi-monthly. Each class has an events committee, which has set up and shared a google doc, for students to sign up and decide what they’d like to bring in (this was done a few weeks ago). The only catch, for tomorrow‘s celebration: NO COSTUMES, NO CANDY and NO NUTS (nut-free) We want to abide by school-wide policies and be mindful of our school-wide peers.
In lieu of a writing notebook entry tonight, I told students they can make cards, for their birthday classmates, if they wanted to do so (and that I would count that towards 1 entry for this week) Taking time out of your day to make a card, to make your classmate feel special and valued shows how much you care. Remember people don’t remember the things we do for ourselves, they remember the kindness giving that you share, so how do you want to leave your mark? How you make others feel is a direct reflection of how we feel about ourselves.
